Immigrants worked for low wages and did hard jobs, but after WWI, this wasn't needed. People started to feel nativism, and U.S. citizens wanted to "Keep America for Americans".

- groups said they were anti-communist, but they were really just wanting to harm people who weren't like themselves
- The KKK, Ku Klux Klan, wanted America to be 100% Americans
- 1924: KKK membership reached 4.5 million
- KKK destroyed businesses, "kept blacks in their place", and drove out Roman Catholics, Jews, and immigrants
- 1919-1921: Immigration grew 600% (141,000-805,000)
- Congress responded to pressure from the citizens and limited immigration from certain countries, specifically southern and eastern Europe
- The Quota System was developed: it established the number of people who could immigrate to America
- In 1927, 150,000 immigrant could be admitted
- Japan was prohibited from immigrating and became upset because they had followed immigration rules created by President Roosevelt
